When can you buy fireworks?
In the UK, most shops can only sell fireworks during set times of the year. These are the periods you’ll find them on our shelves:
The main fireworks season. Diwali falls inside this window this year, so you can pick up everything in one trip.
Fireworks come back in the days between Christmas and New Year.
A short window, so it’s worth coming in early.
The rules to know
- Age: it’s illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 18, and illegal for under-18s to carry them in public. We’ll ask for ID if you look under 25.
- Curfew: no fireworks between 11pm and 7am — except Bonfire Night (until midnight) and New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year (until 1am).
- Where: only let them off on your own property or with the owner’s permission — never in the street or a public park.
How to choose the right fireworks
Most London gardens are on the smaller side, so it pays to choose carefully:
- Multi-shot cakes — the best value for a garden display. Light once and get a full show, with no rockets to aim.
- Rockets — great for big bursts, but you need clear sky overhead with no trees, cables or overhanging roofs.
- Fountains — ground-level effects that work well in smaller spaces.
- Sparklers — a favourite with families. Gloves on, and keep a bucket of water nearby.
- Lower-noise fireworks — a good choice if you have pets, young children or close neighbours.
Every firework label shows a minimum safety distance. Garden fireworks need around 8 metres between the launch point and spectators. If your garden can’t manage that, stick to fountains and sparklers. Not sure? Ask us in store and we’ll help you pick. For more tips, read our guide to a safe garden fireworks display.
Buy early for the best choice
The most popular cakes and rockets sell out in the week before Bonfire Night. Coming in during the second half of October gives you the widest choice — and one less thing to worry about on the night.
