The Classic Approach: A Ready-Made Costume
The simplest option is picking up a full costume in store — we stock a range of Halloween costumes for adults and kids, from classic options like witches, vampires and skeletons through to more current characters. If you know roughly what you want, a quick trip on Lavender Hill sorts it in one go.
For kids specifically, we usually have a good mix of sizes — it’s worth coming in rather than ordering online and hoping the sizing works out.
The Face Paint Route: Build Around a Look
Face paint is the fastest way to pull together a convincing costume from almost nothing. A good face paint kit lets you create a skull, zombie, cat, vampire, clown, or creature look without needing a full costume underneath — a dark outfit you already own does the job. Here are a few that work well:
White base, black eye sockets and nose, decorative patterns. Striking results, surprisingly easy to do. Wear all black underneath.
Grey/green base, dark shadows around the eyes, optional fake wounds. Any ripped or darkened clothing completes it.
A nose, whiskers and ears drawn on takes five minutes. Add a hair band with ears and you’re done. Good for kids and adults.
Pale base, dark under-eyes, red lips, fangs if you have them. A dark shirt and cape finishes it — or just the face paint on its own.
Use Accessories to Elevate a Simple Outfit
A plain dark outfit becomes a costume with the right accessories. We stock wigs, hats, capes, masks and props that can transform something you already own into a full Halloween look. A few combinations that work without any sewing or effort:
- Black outfit + witch hat + face paint — instant witch or wizard
- Dark clothes + vampire cape + pale face paint — classic vampire in minutes
- Any outfit + scary mask — the mask does all the work
- Old clothes + zombie face paint — rip or distress the clothing slightly for effect
Don’t Forget the House
If you’re hosting trick-or-treaters or a Halloween gathering, we also stock decorations — plastic pumpkins, cobwebs, skeleton props, Halloween banners and party supplies. A few well-placed decorations on the door and hallway make a big difference for very little effort.
Face painting is one of the most popular activities at kids’ Halloween parties. Pick up a face paint kit in store and let them choose their own look — it keeps them occupied and the results are usually brilliant.
