Most shelves that fall off walls don’t fall because the person who put them up was bad at DIY. They fall because the wrong fixings were used for the wall type. Get that one thing right, and the rest is straightforward.
Here’s how to do it properly from start to finish.
Step 1: Work Out What Your Wall Is Made Of
This is the step most people skip, and it’s the reason most shelves come down. There are three common wall types in UK homes, and each needs different fixings:
- Solid masonry (brick or block) — the most common in older London flats and houses. Feels very hard when you knock it, makes a dull thud. Needs a masonry drill bit and standard wall plugs.
- Stud wall (timber frame with plasterboard) — common in newer builds and internal walls. Sounds hollow when you knock it. If you can screw directly into a timber stud, these are the strongest fixings available. If you’re between studs, you need specialist plasterboard fixings.
- Dot-and-dab plasterboard on masonry — plasterboard glued to a brick wall with gaps behind it. Sounds slightly hollow but not as hollow as a stud wall. Plasterboard fixings won’t work here — you need to drill through into the masonry behind.
If you’re not sure, a stud detector (also detects solid walls and pipes) takes the guesswork out completely.
Step 2: Mark Your Bracket Positions
Hold your shelf brackets against the wall at the height you want, and use a pencil to mark the screw holes. Then use a spirit level across the two brackets before you drill anything — getting this right at the marking stage saves you filling holes and starting again later.
Step 3: Drill and Fix
For masonry walls: use a masonry drill bit at the correct size for your wall plugs (the packaging will tell you). Drill to the right depth, tap in a wall plug flush with the wall, then screw in your bracket. The wall plug grips the inside of the hole and stops the screw pulling straight out.
For stud walls — into a stud: find the stud with a detector, mark it, and screw directly in with a wood screw. No wall plug needed. This is the strongest possible fixing in a stud wall.
For stud walls — between studs: use plasterboard fixings (also called cavity fixings or toggle bolts). These expand behind the plasterboard once inserted, spreading the load. Don’t use standard wall plugs here — they’ll pull straight through.
Step 4: Check It’s Level, Then Load It Gradually
Once both brackets are fixed, lay your shelf on top, check it’s level again, and screw it down to the brackets if needed. Then load it gradually rather than piling everything on at once — this gives you a chance to spot any movement before it becomes a problem.

Identify the wall type first — this determines which fixings you need. Mark your positions and check they’re level before drilling. Use the right wall plug or plasterboard fixing for your wall. Most shelves fall because of wrong fixings, not bad technique.
